• Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM)—Beginning with versions IOS 12.3.x.x, Cisco included support for
WMM, a subset of the draft 802.11e standard for QoS. WMM is enabled by default as part of the
Quality of Service (QoS) configuration. This feature allows access points to tag and prioritize
multimedia streaming, VolP, and other traffic that requires low latency connections. Connectivity
issues may occur with WPA+TKP on access points with WMM enabled, including:
– When connecting, WZC immediately transitions from “connecting” to “available.” Drop-down
menus in the Pocket WZC do not automatically populate with “WPA” or “TKIP,” but rather have
“Open+WEP” preconfigured.
– Handhelds that have successfully connected on previous occasions may stop after the IOS on the
access point has been upgraded.
– If debug logs have been enabled, the error “Client X failed: WPAIE not found and required”
might appear in the access point log files.
– Similar symptoms may also occur when WPA-PSK is configured. If these issues are present,
disable WMM to see if connectivity improves.
If these issues are present, disable WMM to see if connectivity improves.
To disable WMM:
1.
From the Cisco web-based browser, select Services > QoS > Advanced tab > WiFi
MultiMedia (WMM).
2.
Clear all radio interface checkboxes for WiFi Multimedia and save changes.
3.
From a console/telnet session, configure (for each interface) “ap(config-if)#no dot11 qos mode
wmm” if no QoS features are required used.
Searching for networks to access
Networks that you have already configured are preferred networks and are listed in Wireless
Networks. You can choose whether to connect only to preferred networks or to have your HP iPAQ
search for and connect to any available network (preferred or not).
1. Be sure Wi-Fi is powered on.
2. Tap Start > Settings > Connections tab > Connections icon > Advanced tab > Network Card
button > Wireless tab.
3. In the Networks to access box, tap the type of network you want to connect to (All Available,
Only access points, or Only computer-to-computer).
4. To connect only to networks that have already been configured, clear the Automatically connect
to non-preferred networks checkbox.
Note: If the Automatically connect to non-preferred networks checkbox is checked, then the HP iPAQ will detect any new
networks and provide the opportunity to configure them.
