What is it?
The Color LaserJet 4700, 4005, 4730mfp and CM4730 MFP ship with the toner cartridges pre-
installed. These are the first HP products that will require no user intervention for setting up their
cartridges for initial use. Although there is some shipping material that must be removed from the
printer before use (such as the shipping locks in paper tray, orange shipping tape on fuser unit and
exterior printer skins, etc.), these printers will be much closer to “plug n’ play” than any previous
HP LaserJet or Color LaserJet products.
To achieve this level of customer usability, the printers have three key features:
1. Automatic Toner Dam removal
2. Automatic purge of STATEX sheet from the Electrostatic Transfer Belt (ETB)
3. Cartridge alienation during shipping
Automatic Toner Dam Removal
The 4 cartridges have toner dams that are meant to keep the toner from leaking during shipment.
Upon power up with the toner cartridges installed, the engine will automatically “pull” the toner
dams. These dams are mechanical in nature and construction and are part of the internal workings
of the cartridge so there is no waste for the customer to remove or clean up once the toner dams
have been “removed”.
Automatic Purge of STATEX Sheet from ETB
The Electrostatic Transfer Belt (ETB) has a polymer sheet (trade name STATEX) placed on it to
protect the ETB from damage during shipping. Upon power up, the engine will automatically
purge the STATEX sheet from printer and into the output tray. The user can recycle this sheet along
with other plastics. There is no problem if the user manually removes the STATEX sheet before
